It is not uncommon for most relationships to lack trust, actually especially at the beginning of it. Well, there are always things you can do to help build find confidence in your spouse and trust their actions and words of their mouth before deciding to head out of what you once treasured.
So, in this article, I’m going to list some important things you can do to help you build or regain trust in your romantic relationship.

1. Let Down Your Guard

You can build trust in your romantic relationship by letting down your guard. This way, you are allowing yourself to be vulnerable. This makes you open and authentic and further encourages trust. Your partner will be free around you instead of having mixed feelings about your possible reaction. You must, however, make sure that you are comfortable doing this for your partner and this also comes from your experience around them or your past relationships. So, it is important for you to self-reflect on your fears, insecurities, and most especially, the actual reason behind your guarded nature. It is also important to trust in yourself and take small steps at a time toward your defenselessness.

2. Open and Honest Communication

To build trust in your relationship, you must start by being completely honest in your communication. And this also comes with honesty. You may think that you are trying to protect your partner or their emotions by keeping some key points of the information being passed. But know this, you will not always get away with that. The day it blows up in your face that you have not been sincere, you might spend the rest of your time together as lovers defending it.

3. Provide Your Partner with a Listening Ear

To ensure that you gain the trust of your partner, you have to learn to provide a listening ear. Now, this means being fully present in conversations. Oftentimes, we are ignorantly absent-minded when communicating with other people. This might be because the mind is still fixed on trying to solve a past problem. It is common to most people but when it comes to our relationships, we must make deliberate efforts to be in the conversation, mind, body, and soul.

You have to acknowledge and validate your partner’s emotions and let them know that they are important and that you understand their point and where they are coming from. You should avoid jumping to solutions as your partner might just be looking for a listening ear and someone to feel what they are feeling instead of outright solutions.

4. Prioritize Your Partner’s Needs

One important aspect of building trust in a romantic relationship is knowing how and when to prioritize your partner’s needs. Checking in on each other frequently and avoiding counter-attacks that speed up avoidable arguments. After you have learned to be open and honest in your relationship, there is then the need to understand their needs and concerns.

You should encourage your partner to express their needs and try to understand them from your partner’s perspective. Prioritizing your partner’s needs shouldn’t equate to you abandoning every other thing that matters, however, you should learn to put them first if you want that romantic relationship to last longer.

5. Be Consistent and Reliable

You have to let your partner know that you are trustworthy by being a man of your word. Trust is built and made stronger in a relationship when your partner is confident that they can count on you to be committed and do the right thing. This means that you have to avoid making unnecessary promises you won’t be able to keep.

When you consistently show up for your partner, it reinforces their belief in your reliability and builds trust over time. You should learn to respect your partner’s time by showing up at the set time. If there is going to be a change in your plans, try carrying them along in the new schedule, and don’t make a habit of disappointing your partner. Even in behaviour, you must avoid sudden mood swings or drastic changes in your treatment toward them.
